What grape is for wine, casks for whiskey and hops for beer
is juniper for gin.
Litterally by law, juniper is the essential botanical - out of more than 100. However, there are a few botanicals, that nearly all gin producers use:
coriander, angelica, lemon peel, orris root, cardamon and pepper. Each accentuation opens the door towards an own gin aroma style: spicy, floral, fruity, lemon fresh or simple juniper heavy.
